This recreation area was developed around Yeongsanho, an artificial lake created when the Yeongsan River estuary dam was completed in 1981.

Seonggidong is thought to be the birthplace of Wangin, a scholar from Baekje. Nearby sites and attractions associated with him include the Wangin Historic Site, Munsanjae, Yangsajae, Sangdaepo, and Hoisajeong. The Wangin Culture Festival is held here each April, with activities and exhibits.
